Cameroon axe ‘trouble makers’ from squad

Cameroon players who were identified to have caused trouble during the World Cup in South Africa have been dropped from the team that will face Mauritius Island in their first match of Group E of the qualifiers for the 2012 African Cup of Nations.

The 23-man squad that was picked for the expedition does not include Alexandre Song Bilong, Achille Emana and Carlos Idriss Kameni. The trio, alongside retired captain Rigobert Song, are reported to have been at the origin of the trouble that rocked the dressing room during the 2010 World Cup.

Cameroon was eliminated from the competition during the group stage and many say the revolt by the group of players was at the heart of the poor performance. Since then the new men, who have taken over the team pending the arrival of Clemente, have been cautious not to bring them back into the team.

The Indomitable Lions played their first encounter after elimination from the World Cup against Poland in an international friendly on August 11 and none of the three was summoned to take part in the encounter, which ended 3-0 in favour of Cameroon.

Francois Omam Biyick, who was appointed assistant coach of Cameroon, explained that their absence from the team is as a result of the fact that the technical team has opted to continue with the players who are confident after the 3-0 defeat of Poland. The former Lions forward added: “Any player who is fit, no matter his age, will be considered for selection in the future.” Yet it appears the trio has been set aside on an indefinite unofficial suspension.

Cameroon will travel to Mauritius to play their first encounter of the qualifiers, which will be Javier Clemente’s first as head coach of the Lions.
