Johannesburg — PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe‘s wife may have had an affair with Zimbabwean reserve bank governor Gideon Gono, a newspaper reported yesterday.

The Sunday Times report said that on her deathbed, Mr Mugabe’s younger sister Sabina had warned him that he was being betrayed by Mr Gono and his wife, Grace.

The newspaper reported that the affair involving Mr Gono, head of the central bank and a top confidante of the president, was known among Zimbabwe’s political elite. Ms Mugabe, who is four decades younger than her husband, has reportedly had affairs before. One man is said to have died in a car accident while another was allegedly run out of town by Mr Mugabe and allies.

The newspaper quotes sources as saying Mr Mugabe was so desperate to keep the latest affair a secret that he had senior police commissioner Cain Chademana, the bodyguard at his sister’s deathbed, killed in August. There was no autopsy, and state security officials handed over his body to the family for burial.

The report was authored by Jon Swain, a veteran British writer. The journalist character in the film The Killing Fields was based on him.

Mr Mugabe and Mr Gono have been working together since 1995 when Mr Gono was appointed the president’s personal banker. A senior official in Mr Gono’s office is quoted as saying: “Mugabe trusted Gono. He even thought our boss was taking care of the first lady, keeping a protective eye on her so that she could not again be adulterous.”

They have been married for more than a decade and Ms Mugabe has achieved notoriety for her lavish lifestyle.
