Following the death of the Publisher of Le Messager, Pius Njawe on July 12 in the US, media practitioners in the country have begun making financial contributions for his burial. An organizing committee for the funeral programme was set up on July 14, and on July 20 its members decided on the minimum amount as contribution by the different categories of people in the media sector.

Each media organ in the country is required to contribute FCFA 200.000. Newspaper publishers will have to contribute FCFA 100.000 each, while journalists will contribute FCFA 10.000 each.

Proprietors of ‘enterprises’ will, on their part, contribute FCFA 200.000. These amounts were fixed on July 20 by the organizing committee which comprised a number of newspaper publishers. The committee, which is working in collaboration with the Njawe family, has as General Coordinator, Severin Tchounkeu, Publisher of La Nouvelle Expression.

Michel Michaut Moussala (Aurore Plus) and Haman Mana (Le Jour) are charged with the mobilisation of journalists across the country, while Alain Blaise Batongue (Mutations) is in charge of international mobilisation. Peter William Mandio (Le Front) is in charge of relations with authorities. Meanwhile, Nyemb Popoli (Le Popoli) and Luc Siwe (Le Messager) were designated the Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer respectively.

An account has been opened at Afriland First Bank at Bonanjo, Douala, for the payment of the money. Payment can also be made directly to the Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer. The tentative date for Njawe’s burial is August 7 at Babouantou in Upper Nkam Division, West Region. The contact numbers of the Organizing Committee members are: 99 95 46 11 / 99 95 67 06 / 99 98 96 76 / 75 21 72 42.
