A Cameroonian journalist, who has been seeking asylum in the UK for six years, wins an 11th hour reprieve from being deported. He tells Home Affairs Correspondent Simon Israel he has received death threats.

Charles Atangana wins an 11th hour reprieve from being deported.

The Home Office postponed the enforced repatriation of 42-year-old Charles Atangana scheduled for Monday, pending a judicial review.

He is currently being held in Colnbrook Detention Centre near Heathrow.

A campaign led by the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) says his reports on alleged corruption within the Cameroon government mean there’s a real risk of detention and torture if he’s returned.

Speaking to Channel 4 News, Mr Atangana said he’s received a number of death threats over the past two years from those he suspects of working for Cameroon government.

The threats, he said, coincide with critical articles he’s posted on an African journalism website.

A number of journalists have been heavily censored in the west African country and one editor died in prison, according to the Federation of African Journalists, due to lack of medical attention.

The NUJ has described Atangana as “a well respected journalist on economic and current affairs”, who was forced to flee Cameroon following harassment, detention by the governing regime and continued threats against his family who remain in the country.

He has spent the last four yours in Glasgow working at the Citizens Advice Bureau in the east end of the city as a volunteer, and at the Maryhill Integration Network promoting integration between local people, asylum seekers, refugees and other communities living within the area.
