Lagos — National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) said it has uncovered and sealed off a hospital, ‘God‘s Will Maternity Clinic’, in Keffi, Nassarawa State for illegally dispensing unregistered and fake Chinese medicines.
Its Director General, Dr. Paul Orhii, while addressing a press conference in Lagos office disclosed that the illicit business of the hospital was brought to the knowledge of the agency by a tip off from a “vigilant, patriotic and concerned Nigerian.”
Orhii said that three staff of the hospital namely: Mr Ambelly Remy, Mr. Ayissi Abena and Mr. Tanga Gabriel, have been arrested while Dr. Arsen believed to own the clinic is currently at large.
After the tip off, Orhii said officials of the agency were mobilized to carry out a discreet surveillance of the clinic and series of raids were carried out during which four large ‘Ghana must go’ bags containing assorted registered fake medicines most of which are labeled in Chinese language were discovered.
Other items recovered include a massage suit and a desktop computer unit purported to be a therapy machine used by the suspects to defraud their patients and large quantity of leaflets with fake NAFDAC registration number 454963 used as advertising for cure for various diseases
According to Orhii ,one of the suspects, Remy had earlier been arrested by the agency for a similar offence in 2009, for which investigation is still ongoing before the latest incident noting that all the three suspects, who are Camerounians have made useful statements to help in the investigation.
NAFDAC DG revealed that from the register recovered from the hospital, over 2, 000 people have registered after paying N500 as consultation fee.
